Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Open Fortress?
A: Open Fortress is by and for people who love first person shooters. We’ve taken inspiration from the greatest-ever ‘classic’ FPS games in an effort to make the best, most accessible, and funkiest game that we can. In short, Open Fortress is a fun video game where you zip around and shoot little guys on your computer. And it’s free!
Q: Why is it called "Open Fortress"?
A: Originally, Open Fortress was going to be open source. That changed, but the name didn’t. Now what’s Open are the ‘possibilities’ - the future of Fortress is wide-open, with fights ranging in non-traditional-fortresses such as skate parks and the open streets. It’s open season on your enemies, too. Plus, ‘Open Fortress’ is fun to say. ‘Open Fortress’. Repeat it like a mantra. ‘Open Fortress…’ If you say it enough times, the game might come out faster.
Q: When is the game coming out?
A: This is one of those ‘trick questions’. See, in one sense, the game is already out - the alpha is playable right now on this website! The full release, however, is Coming Soon™. Ever since the official announcement of the TF2 SDK, we’ve been working hard on porting Open Fortress, taking what we’ve learned from years of development to polish it along the way. A whole lot is going on behind the scenes, so stay tuned!
Q: Can I play the alpha version?
A: Yes! Click on 'Download Alpha' to download it - it's that easy. Just remember, this version of the game doesn’t quite represent the product coming to Steam. That'll be even game-ier.
Q: Will the "legacy" (alpha) version of Open Fortress stay available after launch?
A: No. We can’t stop you from hosting it, though.
Q: What's with all the purple?
A: TF2 is all about ‘RED’ and ‘BLU’. In Open Fortress’ far-flung future of the 1970s, the Mercenary has nothing to do with either. Purple’s right in between, so it’s a nice neutral - the TF2 community uses it that way, too; plus, it’s the Mercenary’s favorite color. And it’s our favorite color. And the color of royalty. And so on.
Q: What will change in the Steam release?
A: The Steam version of the game will feature a groovy new look, improved game balance and systems, and a whole lot of the Mercenary. Think ‘kickass multiplayer FPS’, but also think ‘a complete video game’. It’ll be like that, and so much more, with constant updates and a lot of cool surprises.
Q: Will [INSERT THING] be in the final release?
A: Inevitably, to ensure a polished launch, several things tested in the alpha will not make it to the 1.0. Some things need to be redesigned, are slated for replacement, and/or are considered low priorities for development. Special Note For Open Fortress Historians: All-Class, Retro mode, and Espionage are no longer slated for inclusion as part of Open Fortress.
Q: What’s considered high priority?
A: Fleshing out the Mercenary and the world he lives in. This means everything from game feel and map design to narrative content and cool stuff out-of-game.
Q: Will I be able to wear my hats from TF2?
A: No, those hats belong to a bunch of crazy old guys who fought in the Gravel Wars. As a result, no cosmetics from live TF2 will carry over to Open Fortress. However, Merc has a closet full of his own gear, which he can wear however he wants.
Q: Do I need to be familiar with old school shooters to play this?
A: Not at all! As part of our effort to make Open Fortress the best old school / retro / boomer shooter possible, we’re making it inviting and accessible while keeping it true-to-genre and totally badass. Get Psyched!
Q: Also, who the hell is "Get Psyched Games"?
A: We are. We do our game-making things (including everything Open Fortress related) under this name now, so keep an eye out for us!
Q: How do I do that?
A: Make sure to wishlist the game on Steam, and follow Get Psyched Games, too! The best way to keep posted is to join our Discord at discord.gg/GN9DvzQxPy!
